Some governors in western Nigeria have declared Tuesday, August 20, to be Isese Day this year, providing a holiday for state personnel.The Udiroko festival, which featured Yoruba actors Yomi Fash Lanso, Laide Bakare, Shola Kosoko, and Foluke Daramola, is becoming more and more well-known online.
The festival of Udiroko, which was conducted in 1310 under Oba Awamaro, commemorates the first reunion of Ado Ekiti’s ancestors after a long voyage from Benin. It is named for the first celebration held under an Iroko tree.
As previously reported by Insidenaija, a number of governors in the western part of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, August 20, as Isese Day, giving civil officials working in their respective jurisdictions a holiday.
Pictures and videos from the Udiroko event this year have begun to appear on social media. Well-known Yoruba actors that were in Ekiti State for the festival, such as Yomi Fash Lanso, Laide Bakare, Shola Kosoko, and Foluke Daramola, are featured in a film that was uploaded on the festival’s Instagram account.
The celebration, which dates back to Oba Awamaro’s rule in 1310, commemorates the first assembly of Ado Ekiti’s forefathers upon their arrival in the town following a protracted voyage from Benin. The first Udiroko ceremony was held at the palace of the then-reigning Oba, under an Iroko tree. This is where the word Udiroko originates. Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, denied allegations in 2022 that the Udiroko event is connected to idolatry.
