Kunle Afolayan, a movie director, announced on Tuesday that he would be filming scenes for the second season of the Anikulapo series in Ghana.
He captioned a post:“ANIKULAPO SERIES- New season. Location recce in Ghana in collaboration with @nationalfilmauthority @julietyaaasantewaasante,”
The multi-award winning filmmaker visited Ghana along with photographer Peter Okosun and head of the KAP Film and Television Academy Seun Soyinka. His children, Dieko, Darasimi, Darimisire, and Eyiyemi, were also on the trip together. The Portuguese constructed Elmina Castle in 1482 as a slave trade station was one of the locations he visited in Ghana.
Anikulapo Season 2 will touch on themes of slavery and conflict, Insidenaija has learnt. At a meeting held in May at the Cannes Film Festival, Kunle Afolayan and representatives of Ghana’s National Film Authority—headed by CEO Juliet Asante—decided to film in the country.
Before sealing the contract with Ghana, Kunle had contemplated utilising slave posts in Togo or Nigeria, according to those close to the director who spoke with Insidenaija. Juliet Asante thanked Kunle and his colleagues for taking the time to visit some stunning locations in Ghana in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
She added, “It was a great learning experience all round and we had a lot of fun.”
The National Film Authority of Asante is optimistic that Anikulapo would advance her nation’s “Shoot in Ghana” initiative and fortify its artistic ties to Nigeria.
“Ghana is calling on everyone #ShootInGhana in order to document the breathtaking landscapes and first-rate amenities that the nation has to offer. Through these film productions, this program will provide employment possibilities for Ghanaians and present Ghana and its people to a worldwide audience.
In an Instagram post, the agency stated, “This endeavour will enhance tourism, generate income, and strengthen Ghana’s soft power.” The second season of Anikulapo is scheduled to begin filming in the first week of August at the KAP Film Village and Resort in Igbojaye, Oyo State’s Itesiwaju Local Government. The Ghana scenes will be shot thereafter.
The first installment of Anikulapo, a Netflix original film, debuted on September 30, 2022. After that, it was turned into a television series, with the first season, Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, debuting on Netflix on March 1, 2024.
Aisha Lawal, Moji Afolayan, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Taiwo Hassan, Bimbo Ademoye, Kunle Remi, and Sola Sobowale are among the actors who appear in Anikulapo, which was written by Shola Dada, is produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan.
