Ramon Planes: Barcelona will convince Messi to stay

Barcelona’s sporting director, Ramon Planes has stated that Messi is still part of the club’s plans despite his request to leave. According to him, the Catalan side would persuade the 33-year-old to remain at the club. This is coming days after Barcelona’s Argentine forward, Lionel Messi told the club’s authorities on Tuesday via fax, that he wants to leave the club.

Messi has served Barcelona well, he deserves to be treated better

What has happened has happened,” said Planes on Wednesday, confirming that Messi actually asked to leave.

Ramon Planes claims that Barcelona wants to build a new team around Messi, whom he referred to as the most important player in the world.

We want to build a team around [Messi] the most important player in the world, he said.

Full of praise for the Argentine, Planes said that the club wants Messi to lead a new era at Camp Nou. Barca understandably intends to overhaul their squad, following the outcome of last season. Barcelona ended second in the La Liga, despite being ahead before the lockdown. They were axed out of the Champions League in the most humiliating manner, Bayern Munich drubbing them 8-2 in the quarter-finals.

We want to build another winning cycle that would be led by the best player in the world, the best in history.

Furthermore, he spoke of the good memories that Barcelona and Lionel Messi have had together, and how both parties have benefited immensely from each other.

Ramon Planes

Barcelona and Leo are like a marriage, where both have given so much to each other, and have brought so much joy to the fans. I think the future is positive. I am an optimist. Ramon Planes, Technical Director at Barcelona

Chelsea and Man City

It is uncertain if Barcelona would be able to convince Messi to stay on at the club. The speculation surrounding his future has never been this much. Messi could well be playing for Chelsea or Man City by the before the window closes. Manchester United are believed to have also joined the race to land the star player. Who wouldn’t want a Lionel Messi in their team?
