Luke Shaw was one of Manchester United’s standout performers once again as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side defeated Newcastle 3-1 at Old Trafford.

United were far from at their best against the Magpies but Shaw was a key attacking outlet for large periods and his influence continues to grow.

Shaw could not register his sixth league assist of the season but his creative output did not diminish as he was again prominent down the left-flank.

As per Statman Dave, the full-back created five chances against Steve Bruce’s side, which means he has now forged more opportunities for his teammates (45) than any other Premier League defender this season.

The fact that Shaw is statistically now the most creative defender in the league, ahead of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, reiterates how indispensable he has become in recent months.

Alex Telles’ summer arrival is often pointed to as the genesis of Shaw’s rise but he has been one of Solskjaer’s most consistent players for far longer than four months.

Shaw must be considered as England’s first-choice left-back by Gareth Southgate at this summer’s European Championships if he continues on this trajectory.
